The Allen House simultaneously recalls the early Prairie houses and prefigures the Usonians of the 1930s. Wright designed the house while working on plans for the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. This Japanese influence is visible in the red clay tile roof and the enclosed garden, with its lily pool and garden house reminiscent of a Japanese teahouse. The rich interiors feature art glass windows and bookcase doors, as well as gilding applied to the horizontal joints of the masonry walls. Brick scored with thin vertical lines is the dominant material inside and out. Walnut furniture designed by Wright in collaboration with George M. Niedecken is displayed throughout the house. The Allen House Foundation acquired the house in 1990 and has undertaken its restoration.
