Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Wright’s Goetsch-Winckler House (2410 Hulett Road) is considered one of the foremost examples of Wright’s Usonian architecture. These houses, designed during the last two decades of his career, were developed to provide fine design to clients of moderate means. Educators Alma Goetsch and Kathrine Winckler, who commissioned this house in 1939, were perfect clients for a Usonian house.

Considered to be one of the most elegant of the Usonians, the house includes many of the features which earned the first Usonian, the 1936 Jacobs House, a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a part of “The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.” These features include strong connections between interior spaces and the outdoors, use of natural materials, and open planning, which makes the relatively small house feel spacious.
But the Goetsch-Winckler House is also unique. Located on a secluded lot, the house’s daring carport cantilever leads one to the entry, part of a series of French doors that look southeast across a broad lawn. Inside, the main living space opens to tall windows that look northwest across a wooded ravine.
The seller has worked closely with the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy on a number of restoration projects and interior upgrades. An extensive, painstaking restoration has returned the majority of the exterior walls, which had been painted for decades, to their original condition. The bathroom interior walls have been carefully refinished, and updated fixtures that harmonize with the existing aesthetic have been installed.
