Graycliff, Isabelle Martin House
Derby, NY 1926
Graycliff, the summer estate of Isabelle and Darwin D. Martin, is located 14 miles southwest of Buffalo, where Wright built the couple’s full-time residence. The complex sits on an 8.5-acre tract of land on a 60-foot-high cliff above Lake Erie. Wright planned for a main house, chauffeur’s house, boiler house, guest house, caretakers’ cottage and extensive landscape features. Of the proposed buildings, only the first three were built. The main house comprises two buildings joined by a second-story bridge measuring forty-six feet wide. On clear days the spray of Niagara Falls is visible through the opening framed by the bridge and the two buildings. The estate was purchased in 1999 by the nonprofit Graycliff Conservancy.
