Kalita Humphreys Theater
Dallas, TX 1955
Wright adapted his unbuilt 1931 New Theater design to a 1.2-acre site in a park on Turtle Creek near the heart of Dallas. The reinforced concrete structure is built into the hillside rock outcroppings. Wright’s concept for the theater freed the stage of its traditional proscenium frame and joined the actors and audience in a unified space. Significant interior changes have been made over the years, including replacing Wright-designed seating and changing the gold color scheme to dark green and red. Exterior changes include the addition of a large stucco rehearsal and office wing in 1968 and a porte cochere that was later enclosed. A master plan for restoration has been completed but not yet implemented.
