Park Inn Hotel and City National Bank
Mason City, IA 1909
This large commission was originally designed as a bank and adjoining hotel that accommodated fewer than 50 guests. The lawyers who commissioned the work had offices on the upper floors. The bank’s imposing 16-foot-high solid masonry facade has brick piers with colored terra-cotta ornament extended from a sandstone belt course to the roofline and framed the recessed art-glass windows. The building opened in 1910 and endured many changes that compromised Wright’s design. In 2011, after a two-year renovation that included significant restoration and returned the exterior to Wright’s original design, the Historic Park Inn Hotel opened with 27 guest rooms, a restaurant and bar, and an event space housed in the former bank building.
