Wright faced several challenges in creating Unity Temple. The congregation insisted on a $45,000 budget, and the site was small, long and narrow on a noisy main street. Wright’s solutions, including the choice of reinforced concrete as the building material and the bold simplicity of the cubist design, were unprecedented. The material produced a monumental facade at minimal cost, afforded privacy and muffled street noise. Ornament was cast into the form, eliminating the expense of a brick or plaster veneer. The square sanctuary accommodates 400 people, yet no congregant is seated more than 45 feet from the pulpit. A large-scale restoration of the building began in 2015.
