Waller Gates
River Forest, IL 1901
Six rock-face, cut-limestone pylons—set on concrete base skirts and topped with dressed-stone caps—and two metal fence sections remain from what was once the impressive entrance gate Wright designed for Edward C. Waller, one of Wright’s earliest patrons, for his six-acre estate along the Des Plaines River. The gates, which have been partially restored with replicas of the original lanterns, were originally constructed after Waller sold a portion of his land to William Winslow. In 1893 Wright designed a residence for Winslow that stands just inside the gateway.
