Minneapolis, MN 1933
With the economy in ruins, this commission came at a time when Wright needed it badly. With this house, he learned how to design for the middle class. The final plan is a one-story structure with a solid brick wall (penetrated only by small slit windows) facing the only neighboring house and floor-to-ceiling glass windows opening onto a terrace on the garden side. The living and dining areas share one space, highlighted by a massive chimney and fireplace. The kitchen is connected more continuously to the living area. Built-in bookcases line the long, narrow hallway to the bedroom wing. Open houses are scheduled and group tours are available by prior arrangement with the owners.
