Wingspread, Herbert and Irene Johnson House
Wind Point, WI 1937
Wright’s house for Herbert Fisk Johnson Jr., the son of SC Johnson founder Samuel C. Johnson, was built at approximately the same time as the SC Johnson Administration Building and supervised by Wright apprentice John Lautner. The house is comprised of four zoned wings emanating from a central core in a pinwheel configuration. The roof structure of the core incorporates three levels of clerestory windows and a glass “bird’s nest.” In 1959 the Johnsons gave the house and grounds to The Johnson Foundation, which today operates an educational conference center on the site.
