“Behind the refrigerator!”
“I actually have a basement!”
“So do I!”

The Homeowner Drop-In on July 12 was supposed to be about lighting, but also was about extreme weather, as at least 6 people on the call, including Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy employees, were under tornado watches and several sirens went off during the call. All were in Chicago and its suburbs. Fortunately, there were no reports of damage following the extreme weather incident.

Under the distressing circumstances, the group went on to discuss safety concerns, and how to properly shelter in place during an extreme weather warning like the one that was going on in real time.

While everyone on the call had certainly thought about the question, it was interesting to hear about the various nooks and crannies available in Frank Lloyd Wright houses where a person might consider themselves safe, since many do not have below-ground basements. For instance, the person quoted above who was planning on sheltering behind their refrigerator actually had a small nook there the size of a person.

The week of July 10 was a week of severe weather across the US, with extreme heat, storms, tornados and wildfires making up the “New Normal,” according to the New York Times.
The stalwart group of homeowners surprisingly managed to also cover many topics of lighting, including where to have quality reproductions made, outdoor lighting, LED lighting and making dark houses brighter.

For those homeowners who are battling their own emergencies and have questions, please feel free to contact John Waters at the Conservancy to discuss issues of lighting, weather concerns or whatever subject related to home maintenance is on your mind.
